Luckily, Alvin Ho could talk on the bus and away from school. ![]() Being unable to talk made it very unlikely to ever get picked for the guys' Revolutionary war teams during recess, but they couldn't keep him from playing dead. It made it very uncomfortable for him when he had to sit by a girl, but luckily, the girl he seemed to get stuck sitting beside was really cool with an eyepatch and peg leg. ![]() That made it impossible for him to read out loud when he was asked to. He was so afraid of teachers and school and girls that he had never been able to utter one word in school. ![]() His wild imagination continuously introduced more problems. He was sure famous ghosts of people like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Louisa May Alcott lived in the nearby houses. ![]() He had his own LONG list of scary things that included things like girls, elevators, ghosts, and teachers. "The scary thing about girls is that they are not boys."Īlvin's grandparents had come from China where his great-grandfather was a courageous hero who fought tigers and lions in his garden. ![]()
